Connecting your Blackberry to your Google Calendar
First, download and install Google Sync as follows:
- Point your BlackBerry browser to: http://m.google.com/sync
Once the page is open, you'll see a Download Google Sync link.
- Click the jog wheel or BlackBerry menu button to open the menu, and select Get link. This will take you to a download page.
- Click Download.
Installation will happen automatically upon the completion of the download. After installation, you can find the Google Sync icon on your home screen. To start using Sync:
- Click the Google Sync icon, which resembles an aspirin with a "g" on it and some swirling blue arrows.
- You will get a login screen.Move the cursor to the login section, and enter your full email address (including @carthage.edu) and your password.
- Click Login. Google Sync will sign in to your account. Once you've successfully signed in, read the information on the Welcome screen. You can make changes to the default settings by clicking on the scroll wheel and selecting Options from the menu. Both Calendar and Contacts syncing are enabled by default for new users. (If you're upgrading from the previous Calendar-only version of Google Sync, you'll need to enable Contacts sync.) Press the menu button and click Save.
- Click the Sync Now button at the bottom of the Welcome screen or press the menu button and click Sync Now.
The initial synchronization may take some time, depending on the number of events you have in your Google Calendar and the number of contacts in your Gmail Contacts.
Open you Blackberry calendar application to view your events as found in your Google calendar. To sync your calendar manually from within the Blackberry calendar, press the menu button and click Google Sync at the top of the menu.
Useful information to know for Blackberry users:
- The calendar sync will only sync your Google Calendar to your Blackberry and your Blackberry to Google Calendar for the events entered after your first sync. Subsequent syncs will include any new calendar entries made at your computer or on your Blackberry. Previously created calendar entries from your Blackberry will not be copied to your Google Calendar.
- Use your Blackberry Options Button to access calendar tasks. Be sure to look at the “More…” item on the list for some helpful features.
- If you delete email on your Blackberry it will be immediately deleted on your Google account. You do not have to delete it in both applications. Once you delete the email is gone.
- If you delete email on your Google Mail using your computer, it will not immediately delete on your Blackberry. You can use your Options button to get to the features, select More… and then “All Mail”. This will cause a re-sync of your email, removing the items you deleted on your computer.
- You can also go to m.google.com and install the Google Mobile App. It will have the same type of prompts as you have seen with installing Gmail and Calendar applications. Answer them in the same manner. This will place an icon on your Blackberry screen that looks like a blue circle with a white “g”. This application will show icons for many Google Apps. Select “More” to see even more applications. If you have not already installed the application, the first time selected it will prompt you with installation instructions. Sometimes they work and other times they do not. If you have trouble installing an application, turn off the Blackberry, turn it back on, and go to m.google.com and scroll down to select the individual application as these instructions directed for GMAIL and Calendar.
- It helps if your communications signal is strong.
- When entering passwords, look carefully at what you are typing. The letter or number you are typing shows the letter for a very very short time and then replaces it with an asterisk.
