Off Campus User's Guide - for all users

Off-Campus User’s Guide to Carthage Electronic Resources

This document provides information to Carthage users who access electronic resources from off-campus.  The resources discussed in this document include:

Carthage E-mail

Because Carthage’s Google Apps e-mail system is web-based, it is accessed in exactly the same way from on or off-campus.  It also provides calendar, document sharing, and web hosting capabilities.  Access the Carthage e-mail system through your web browser either by:

More information about Carthage e-mail and Google Apps is available on http://albert.carthage.edu or in printed form in the Hedberg library.

Library Periodical and Reference Databases

If you are off-campus, Carthage provides a proxy service to allow accessing paid periodical databases.  There is no proxy client to install, but you need to watch for the “yellow lock” and "green check" icons to the right of the database names on the Carthage library web site to go through the proxy.  This will allow you to access almost all of the Hedberg Library databases from off-campus, using your Novell user name and password to authenticate. (Database specific passwords are no longer available, so if you get a screen prompting you for a database password, you have not clicked on the appropriate link to invoke the proxy.)  If you have problems logging in to the proxy, see the Novell section of this document.

More information regarding off-campus access is available at http://www.carthage.edu/library/reference/offcampusaccess

To access our periodical databases by title, go to http://www.carthage.edu/library/reference/articles.  Click the "yellow lock" or "green check" icon to the right of the name of the database you wish to access.

Library Catalog

Accessing the Carthage library on-line catalog from off-campus is identical to accessing it from on-campus.  Since the library catalog is web-based, it can be accessed from any web browser anywhere.  Once you launch your browser, you can bring up the Carthage library catalog as follows:

Bring up the Carthage web site at http://www.carthage.edu and select the link for Library and Technology at the left.  (If you are on the Community site, click the Hedberg Library link at the right,) or go directly to http://www.carthage.edu/library.  Click "Find books" at the upper left.  Click "Carthage Online catalog."

Carthage Web Site, including the “Insider”

When users connect to the Carthage web site at www.carthage.edu from an ON-campus location, the page that displays is the Carthage Community page, which offers resources most appropriate for community members such as students, faculty, and staff.  When users connect to the same address (www.carthage.edu) from an OFF-campus location, the page that displays is the standard external Carthage web presence, which offers a variety of resources more targeted to prospective students, donors, and other visitors.

From off-campus, you can access the Community page by clicking on “Quick Links” in the upper-right-hand corner of most pages, or by going to community.carthage.edu
From on-campus, you can access the standard external web page by clicking the Home Page link in the Carthage Links box at the right of the page, or going to http://www.carthage.edu/?ext

Some of the Carthage web site resources, such as the Campus Directory, require authentication using a login and password.  Unless otherwise specified, use your Novell user ID and password for these areas.

The Portal: My.Carthage.edu

The portal is available at http://my.carthage.edu or by clicking on the My.Carthage link at the upper right of the Carthage web site.  Use your NOVELL user ID and password to login at the upper right. (If you cannot login, test your Novell user ID by going to http://help.carthage.edu - the Request Tracker help request system.) If you can login to help but not to the portal (my.carthage.edu,) please report the problem either by creating a new ticket on the help.carthage.edu web site in the ERP-Portal category or by e-mailing your inquiry to erp@help.carthage.edu. Tell us that you CAN login to Novell at help but not to the portal.

This is where you can access eRacer, which replaces Blackboard as the online course system. It's also where you register for housing and classes, check grades, check financial aid.

If you can't login to help.carthage.edu either, then go to http://www.carthage.edu/password and use that screen to reset your Novell password. Please read the screen carefully.

If you don't know your Novell user ID, it is the same as your e-mail login. If you don't know your Novell password, you'll want to make sure you get that worked out before your time to register! First try using www.carthage.edu/password to reset it, and if that doesn't work, contact the MyCarthage Resource Center in person with your ID or e-mail the request to computers@help.carthage.edu. Make sure to specify you need help with your Novell user ID and password."

Registration functions are accessible by clicking on the Advising and Registration.

Recovering Lost Passwords

If you’ve forgotten a password or don’t know it, you can reset it yourself for the systems listed below.  For other systems, you will need to contact the MyCarthage Resource Center to request a password reset.  You can do this by e-mailing passwords@help.carthage.edu from your Carthage e-mail or by calling 262-551-5950.  Please include information on how we can contact you, preferably via e-mail.

Novell user ID and password

Novell user IDs are the same as e-mail IDs.  For example, the Novell user ID for James Ellis should be jellis.  If you have a common last name, you may have a number in your id, e.g. mmiller2. Novell passwords are initially set to the student ID number.

Help Yourself Tip:  You can reset your own Novell password at any time using the worldwide web.  Open a browser and point it to http://www.carthage.edu/password.  Fill out the required information on the screen, including part of your social security number, date of birth, and student id number.  You will then be prompted to enter a new password.  Remember that your new password must be at least six characters long, have at least one letter and one number, and be something you have not used before.

If the above does not work, you can e-mail passwords@help.carthage.edu or contact the MyCarthage Resource Center at the Hedberg Library in person or at 551-5950.  The request may take up to 24 business hours to fill, and you must pick up the information in person and bring a picture ID.

You can get help with technology-related questions or contact library services, computer services, or media services via the MyCarthage Resource Center in one of the following ways:

  • Visit us in the Hedberg Library
  • E-mail us at help@help.carthage.edu
