Scheduling Updates in Symantec Anti-Virus

Scheduling Updates in Symantec Anti-Virus

When you install Symantec Anti-virus (the one supplied by Carthage,) it is automatically set to update its definitions weekly every Friday evening.  We recommend that you change that so that the definitions are updated daily at a time when your computer will likely be on.  Here’s how:

For Windows Users

  1. Right-click on the Symantec icon (looks like a gold shield that tilts to the right) in the systray at the lower right corner of your screen.  (You may have to expand that area by clicking the < to see it.)
  2. Click Open Symantec Anti-virus
  3. Click the File menu
  4. Click Schedule Updates…
  5. Click the Schedule button
  6. Click the circle next to Daily
  7. Select a time from the drop-down box
  8. Click the OK button
  9. Click OK again.  Click Exit

For Mac Users

  1. In your Applications folder, open Symantec Anti-Virus
  2. Click on Automatic Protection on the left side. If necessary, click the lock in order to make changes.
  3. Click Configure under Scheduled Protection.
  4. Click the New button
  5. In the Pop Up box ad Product Update Event (and Virus Scan Event, if desired)
    1.  add Name your update task
    2. Choose to update All Products
    3. Set a Frequency to Daily
    4. Set the time when you expect your computer to be on, but not necessarily noon or midnight
  6. Delete any other product update tasks by clicking them, and then click Delete Event
  7. Click OK
